I had my camera with me at all times with a mission to grab a few shots, but instead I found myself re-tracing the steps taken when I was here in February. I visited the Upper West Side where I walked past the hotel block I stayed and ate in a pancake house Chloe found for us. I visited the hotel where Gavin and Kerry stayed and of course carved my way back to The Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn. I remember feeling very lucky to be only a few days away from joining my lovely friend Miss Loves in Hollywood because without that, I’d been feeling pretty lonely and hear-broken. Hollywood is as busy, maybe more so with its sprawling boulevards and endlessly creeping traffic, but everything feels a little more accessible somehow. In NY it felt like everything was enclosed in apartments or within up and coming district’s our pocket books were too out of date to highlight (we had no pocket-books), but the life and pulse of Hollywood is right there on the street, through open restaurant doors and bars – hundreds of neon signs all competing for your attention – fast food, cheap beer, fortune tellers etc. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579226738419c2b046a2605a/1469632753020-8AFI97Q5WVEQPA2MIWIW/12022593_956859801047790_4222188171395462810_o.jpg Places - Hollywood (Copy) Hollywood I suppose the drastically different climate will affect the cultural dynamic of the two city’s, plus the two times I’ve stayed in NY, I’ve been located in Manhatten rather than Brooklyn or Harlem, so that will also be a factor and I’m not not really known for any ‘sniffing-out-the-action’ abilities AND the three boulevards we patronised for most of our stay were only really filled with fast food, cheap bars and homeless people so I suppose, if fine dining and winebars are your thing, then this ain’t the place for you. Me, however – I cannot get enough fast food. This was taken on a subway platform as I exited the subway carriage. I saw the old woman on the bench, decided it would make a great shot and took my chance - I lifted my camera, focused as quickly as I could and pressed the shutter. It was a surprise for her to have been looking directly into the lens as I took the shot and this had me drop the camera after one photo to move on but a heartbeat after I took the one and only shot, her stony expression dissolved into broad, warm smile that would have made an infinitely better photograph. In this case, with somebody who is so public in profile, snapping a moment in time where they are relaxed and comfortable is important to me. The expression on her face, for me, captures a calm, representation of her personality that her public won't often see. We were getting solid photographs which we were happy with - no problem - but as we were breaking down for the day, we noticed the studio's principal photographic room was now vacant so as a last gasp of creativity, I suggested we run in, place a light and do a few last minute shots.
